Tom kushimba shikumba shabanana dakupya.

Tom carries a tray of ripe bananas.

Tom kuyenda kulivango lyakughulitira aka ghulite banana.

Tom goes to the market to sell bananas.


People buying fruit at a market.

Vantu kulivango lyakughulita kuna kughura nyango.

People at the market are buying fruit.

Ene ngoli naumweshi ana kughuro banana da Tom. Kwahora kughura nyango kuvakamali.

But no one is buying Tom’s bananas. They prefer to buy fruit from women.

” Munkarapamwe yetu, vakamali vaghulitango nyango,” mo vana kughamba vantu. Mukafumu munke uno?” Vana kupura vantu.

“In our community, only women sell fruit,” people say. “What kind of a man is this?” people ask.

Ene ngoli Tom kapi ana kukutapa. Ana kuyiyira, Ghure nu banana dande! “Ghure nu banana dande dakupya daditovali”

But Tom does not give up. He calls, “Buy my bananas! Buy my sweet ripe bananas!”

Mukamali umwe nko kudamuna po banana dimwe pashikumba. Nko kudikengurura banana.

One woman picks up a bunch of bananas from the tray. She looks at the bananas carefully.

The woman buys the bananas.

Shingi shavantu nko kuya kukaghutara. Nko kughura banana da Tom nakudi lya.

More people come to the stall. They buy Tom’s bananas and eat them.

Ntaani, shikumba sha muporongwa. Tom kuna kuvara maliva ogho ana wana mo.

Soon, the tray is empty. Tom counts the money he earned.

Mposhi Tom a ghure murora, shuka, namboroto. A ture vininke pashikumba shendi.

Then Tom buys soap, sugar, and bread. He puts the things in his tray.

Tom kutengena nawa shikumba pamutwe wendi nko kuyenda mumundi.

Tom balances the tray on his head and goes home.
