A woman carrying a basket of fruit on her head and three children watching her from a house.

Liyuva limwe, vanane kwa kalire nanyango dadiyingi.

One day, mama got a lot of fruit.

“Ruvede ke nka ngatu kara nanyango?” Atu pura. “Kutu kara nado kumatiku,” ava ghamba vanane.

“When can we have some fruit?” we ask. “We will have the fruit tonight,” says mama.


A boy eating lots of fruit.

Mukurwande Rahin ne mankonko. Kumakera nyango nadintje. Kudilya unene.

My brother Rahim is greedy. He tastes all the fruit. He eats a lot of it.

“Kenga ovyo ana rughana Rahim!” Ana haruka muunyande wamumati. “Rahim utwini ntani kukughayara tupu mwene.

“Look at what Rahim did!” shouts my little brother. “Rahim is naughty and selfish,” I say.

Mother is angry with Rahim.

Natwe nka tuna garapa na Rahim. Ene ngoli Rahim kapi ana kuromba mbiri.

We are also angry with Rahim. But Rahim is not sorry.

“Aren’t you going to punish Rahim?” asks little brother.

“Rahim, soon you will be sorry,” warns mama.


An ill-looking boy.

Rahim ana vareke kuvera.

Rahim starts to feel sick.

“Kuna kushuma kulira lyande,” ana kughoghota Rahim.

“My tummy is so sore,” whispers Rahim.

Vanane va vi yivire ashi vya weno kuvishora. Nyango kuna kumu tengeka Rahim!

Mama knew this would happen. The fruit is punishing Rahim!

Muruku, Rahim atu pa mbiri. ” Kapi ngani pira nka kutapa,” ana huguvalita. Ntani natuvantje tuna vipura.

Later, Rahim says sorry to us. “I will never be so greedy again,” he promises. And we all believe him.
