A woman carrying a basket of fruit on her head and three children watching her from a house.

Ezuva limwe onane kwakere noyikwaenyango yoyinzi.

One day, mama got a lot of fruit.


A girl and two boys looking at a basket of fruit.

“Siruwoke natu gwana ko nose yikwaenyango yimwe” Tatu pura. “Ose tatu gwana yikwaenyango yetu naina masiku.” Yimo vana ku tanta onane.

“When can we have some fruit?” we ask. “We will have the fruit tonight,” says mama.


A boy eating lots of fruit.

Mumbyange Rahim makurulya. Ta makagere yikwaenyango nayinye. Age ta li po yoyinzi.

My brother Rahim is greedy. He tastes all the fruit. He eats a lot of it.

“Tara eyi ana rugana Rahim” Yimo ana kuzigira mumbyange gomunona. Rahim utwini age hena manyami” Yimo nina kuuyunga.

“Look at what Rahim did!” shouts my little brother. “Rahim is naughty and selfish,” I say.

Mother is angry with Rahim.

Nose tuna muhandukire Rahim, nye age Rahim nombili si.

We are also angry with Rahim. But Rahim is not sorry.

“Aren’t you going to punish Rahim?” asks little brother.

“Rahim, soon you will be sorry,” warns mama.

Rahim ta vareke kuvera.

Rahim starts to feel sick.

“Mezimo lyange kwaku kora” Yimo ana kuwowota Rahim.

“My tummy is so sore,” whispers Rahim.

Onane vana yidiva asi eyi yiyo nayi ka horoka. Yikwaenyango yiyo yina ku tengeka Rahim.

Mama knew this would happen. The fruit is punishing Rahim!

Konyima, Rahim ta gava mbili kwetu. “Kapi hena nganiyitengwira kukara makurulya,” Ta tumbidire. Makura natuvenye tatu yipura.

Later, Rahim says sorry to us. “I will never be so greedy again,” he promises. And we all believe him.
