Esta é Khalai. Ela tem sete anos de idade. Seu nome significa ‘pessoa boa’ em sua língua, Lubukusu.

This is Khalai. She is seven years old. Her name means ‘the good one’ in her language, Lubukusu.

Khalai acorda-se e fala com a laranjeira. “Por favor, laranjeira, cresça grande e nos dê muitas laranjas maduras.”

Khalai wakes up and talks to the orange tree. “Please orange tree, grow big and give us lots of ripe oranges.”

Khalai vai a pé para a escola. No caminho ela fala com a grama. “Por favor, grama, cresça mais verde e não seque.”

Khalai walks to school. On the way she talks to the grass. “Please grass, grow greener and don’t dry up.”

Khalai passa pelas flores selvagens. “Por favor, flores, continuem florescendo para que possa colocá-las em meu cabelo.”

Khalai passes wild flowers. “Please flowers, keep blooming so I can put you in my hair.”

Na escola, Khalai fala com a árvore no meio do pátio. “Por favor, árvore, crie galhos grandes para que possamos ler embaixo de sua sombra.”

At school, Khalai talks to the tree in the middle of the compound. “Please tree, put out big branches so we can read under your shade.”

Khalai fala com os arbustos em volta da sua escola. “Por favor, cresçam fortes para impedirem que pessoas más entrem aqui,”

Khalai talks to the hedge around her school. “Please grow strong and stop bad people from coming in.”

Quando Khalai volta para casa da escola, ela visita a laranjeira. “Suas laranjas já estão maduras?” pergunta Khalai.

When Khalai returns home from school, she visits the orange tree. “Are your oranges ripe yet?” asks Khalai.

“As laranjas estão verdes ainda,” suspira Khalai. “Verei você amanhã, laranjeira,” diz Khalai. “Talvez até lá você tenha laranjas maduras para mim!”

“The oranges are still green,” sighs Khalai. “I will see you tomorrow orange tree,” says Khalai. “Perhaps then you will have a ripe orange for me!”
